Buddy Obstacle Course Fun!

MRA participates in Buddy Activities on Wednesdays. Each student is assigned a buddy (except for fourth graders) at the beginning of the year and rotates to different classroom activities together each week.

The Wildwoods Gym is transformed into a giant obstacle course for the Buddy activities. These Obstacle courses provide a variety of tasks for the students to accomplish using a variety of equipment. The buddies work together to problem solve, follow directions and experiment with PE equipment in different ways. They also work with their buddies to keep the course running by taking turns to be the clean up crew. It is fun to see the students working and having fun with their buddies during this physical activity.

K-2nd Grade - These students have started a new PE unit called "Manipulatives." This unit offers opportunities to work with objects of different shapes, sizes, weights, and textures. They are also working on the different movement skills such as balancing, rolling small and large objects, moving wands through space and tossing and catching while stationary and moving.

3rd - 8th Grade - These students have started the PE unit of Volleyball. They are exploring the skills of passing, setting and the underhand serve. These volleyball skills will be practiced alone, with partners, and with groups. The goal is to be able to play a variation to the game of volleyball at the end of the unit.

7th and 8th Grade Health Class - The health classes are continuing to work on their unit of effective communication. We are talking about how others may try to influence or manipulate student's actions. The students are learning and practicing refusal skills, and different ways to say "no" in different situations. They have been working in a variety of groups and acting out different scenarios in skits to practice their strategies. They have come up with some creative ways to say, "no!"
